Follow these steps to change the text on a Windows Server 2008 (R2) machine:

1. Logon to your server with the Administrator account.
2. Start RegEdit and navigate to the following key: HKCR\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}
3. If necessary, take the ownership of this key, grant yourself full control rights and then edit the LocalizedString value.
4. In the edit window type: %UserName% on %ComputerName%. Click OK and close RegEdit.
5. Press F5 somewhere on the desktop and the text on the Computer icon should now display the logged on user name.

Tested on Windows Server 2008 R2 Build 7600.

The search box in start menu stopped working. The search from windows explorer works fine, just the start menu does not work. All it returns is:

Error Message:

Windows Security – These files can’t be opened.

Your Internet security settings prevented one or more file from being opened.

This was the Solution for me .. Tried removing Windows Search, rebuilding Index Search Catalog using Control Panel Applet ‘Indexing Option’ etc.. but in the end the following was the solution:

1. End Task on EXPLORER.EXE from Task Manager.
2. Start the Registry Editor
3. Look for the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FolderTypes\{EF87B4CB-F2CE-4785-8658-4CA6C63E38C6}\TopViews\{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}
4. Rename the key so it looks like the following:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FolderTypes\{EF87B4CB-F2CE-4785-8658-4CA6C63E38C6}\TopViews\{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}.BACKUP
5. From Task Manager click on File | New Task (Run) and type EXPLORER.EXE and hit return.
6. Now try your search from the Start Menu again.

If the above process doesn’t work for you, you can always put it back the way it was by reversing the process above.

There is an account in Microsoft Windows that is more powerful than the Administrator account in Windows Operating Systems. That account is called System account it is similar to the root OR super user in the Linux/Unix world . I will show you how to access this system account in this article.

In the ‘good old days’ of Windows 2000 / Windows XP there was this AT.exe command with the /interactive parameter/switch.. if you scheduled a task using

AT 12:34 /interactive cmd.exe

cmd.exe was started by the scheduler windows service and since this service was running under system account, the cmd.exe process was created by local system authority => result, your cmd.exe process was running as system.

Nowadays, with Windows 7 / Windows Vista and UAC and other improvements, the AT /interactive way does no longer work. but (for sake of Christ) there are those SysInternal Tools by the almighty doctor Russinovich. Especially we’re looking at the psexec.exe tool in this post .. So, to run a cmd.exe or any other process as system, just download psexec.exe and call it as follows:

C:\>\Temp\SysinternalsSuite\PsExec.exe -i -d -s cmd.exe

cmd.exe started on CONWKS100 with process ID 5220.

In the opened cmd.exe type:

C:\Windows\system32>whoami

and you’ll see, you’re ‘the god of your system’ and you have all privileges.

On further investigation I realised that only the files supported by Windows Media Player did not show the Enqueue in Foobar option.

Though the usual solutions to the problem involve registry modifications, I found a very simple solution to it.

First make sure the Folder Context Menus option is checked in the Library>Configure>Shell Integration in Foobar.

1. Go to Control Panel > Default Programs > Set program access and computer defaults

2. Choose the Custom configuration.

3. In the section Choose a default media player uncheck Enable access to this program for Windows Media Center and Windows Media Player.

4. you’re done!

The “Enqueue in Foobar” option will be present in the right-click context menu of all audio files now.

To coy the contents of text files do:

copy file1.ext+file2.ext targetFile.ext

this will work as long as the files are plain text files (no Ctrl-Z characters inside the files)

If you need to merge binary files like .exe, .zip or one of those HJSplit, GSplit or a similar program that splitted files.. they usually are numbered like file.001, file.002 and so on, then use the /b parameter

copy /b file.001+file.002 file.bin

here are the possible copy command switches:

Copies one or more files to another location.

  source       Specifies the file or files to be copied.
  /A           Indicates an ASCII text file.
  /B           Indicates a binary file.
  /D           Allow the destination file to be created decrypted
  destination  Specifies the directory and/or filename for the new file(s).
  /V           Verifies that new files are written correctly.
  /N           Uses short filename, if available, when copying a file with a
               non-8dot3 name.
  /Y           Suppresses prompting to confirm you want to overwrite an
               existing destination file.
  /-Y          Causes prompting to confirm you want to overwrite an
               existing destination file.
  /Z           Copies networked files in restartable mode.
  /L           If the source is a symbolic link, copy the link to the target
               instead of the actual file the source link points to.

The switch /Y may be preset in the COPYCMD environment variable.
This may be overridden with /-Y on the command line.  Default is
to prompt on overwrites unless COPY command is being executed from
within a batch script.

To append files, specify a single file for destination, but multiple files
for source (using wildcards or file1+file2+file3 format).

Using the Control Panel, you can change settings for Windows. These settings control almost everything on display and functionality of Windows and they allow you to set up Windows to suit your requirements. The Panel, in my opinion, should be used only if there is a need, as a user and an awareness of the effects of the settings. Otherwise, I always recommend asking an experienced PC users for advice and help (something like what I do so even if my car as something wrong with the electrics).

Compared to Vista when Windows 7 has not only changed the face a lot. The Panel has some modifications. Open the Control Panel by first clicking the Start button and then click Control Panel.

To search for the desired panel element has the following two methods:

1. Using the search

To find an interesting setting for you, or a task that you want to run, type a word or a keyword in the search box which can be found in the upper right corner. For example, type ‘sound’ to find all tasks related with settings for the sound card, system sounds and the volume control in the taskbar.

2. Browse

You can browse the Control Panel by clicking on various categories.

Tip

When you browse the Control Panel, you can quickly jump to an item in the list by typing the first few letters of the items name. To switch to settings related to ‘sound’, just type sou. The first panel item that begins with the letters sou i then selected in the window. You can of course also use the arrow key (up, down, left, right) to navigate through the Control Panel items.

When you open the Control Panel in Windows 7, it will be open by default in Category View, with about 30 choices, the system or adapt to penetrate deeper into the categories of the Control Panel. Toggle the view to be ‘Small Icons’ to, so be delivered to an already 55 customization options for different tasks. Secret Windows control center or secret control panel?

In the Internet it is often pointed to a tip that will unlock a secret control center or secret panel in Windows Vista and Windows 7.
It is often said that one or the other element of this Panel, in the normal way would never get to see.. now you can decide on your own, wheter these rumours are true or not..

To see all available Control Panel items, just use this string..

you can also copy/paste it in the run dialog or just press the Windows Key once and paste it there..

This will open ‘a hidden/very secret’ All Tasks window:

Alternatively you can create a folder called ‘All Tasks’ to open the All Tasks window..

The name of the folder must be ‘All Tasks.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}’. When you hit the enter key to save the folder, the string {ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} will disappear.
