Changing the text on the Computer icon on your Remote Desktop Services Session Host is handy when a user calls you and you want to know which Session Host the user is logged on. The procedure to do this has changed since Windows Server 2003.

Follow these steps to change the text on a Windows Server 2008 (R2) machine:

Logon to your server with the Administrator account.

Start RegEdit and navigate to the following key: HKCR\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}

If necessary, take the ownership of this key, grant yourself full control rights and then edit the LocalizedString value.

In the edit window type: %UserName% on %ComputerName%. Click OK and close RegEdit.

Press F5 somewhere on the desktop and the text on the Computer icon should now display the logged on user name.

Tested on Windows Server 2008 R2 Build 7600.

Time synchronization is an important aspect for all computers on the network. By default, the clients computers get their time from a Domain Controller and the Domain Controller gets his time from the domain’s PDC Operation Master. Therefore the PDC must synchronize his time from an external source. I usually use the servers listed at the NTP Pool Project website.

Before you begin, don’t forget to open the default UDP 123 port (in- and outbound) on your firewall.

First, locate your PDC Server. Open the command prompt and type: C:\>netdom /query fsmo

Log in to your PDC Server and open the command prompt.

Stop the W32Time service: C:\>net stop w32time

Configure the external time sources, type: C:\> w32tm /config /syncfromflags:manual /manualpeerlist:”0.pool.ntp.org, 1.pool.ntp.org, 2.pool.ntp.org”

Make your PDC a reliable time source for the clients. Type:C:\>w32tm /config /reliable:yes

Start the w32time service: C:\>net start w32time

The windows time service should begin synchronizing the time. You can check the external NTP servers in the time configuration by typing: C:\>w32tm /query /configuration

Check the Event Viewer for any errors.

Tested on Windows Server 2008 R2 (Build 7600).

Command Line version of Server Manager in Windows Server 2008 R2
Today I was using “ServerManagerCmd.exe” on a Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2. When I executed it I saw the following informational message:

“Servermanagercmd.exe is deprecated, and is not guaranteed to be supported in future releases of Windows. We recommend that you use the Windows PowerShell cmdlets that are available for Server Manager.”

It was created in Windows Server 2008 and it is already deprecated!

It is not really a surprise, because Microsoft is going all the way with PowerShell and more and more products are becoming PowerShell-enabled. Also see this post on how to use snap-ins/modules.

MicrosoftDeploymentToolkit2010_x86.msi for the 32bit Release of Microsoft Deployment Toolkit RC

Notes

MDT 2010 RC is tested with pre-RC build of Config Manager 2007 SP2.

User State Migration Tool

You no longer need to download the Windows User State Migration Tool (USMT) version 4.0 separately; it is part of the Windows AIK for Windows 7. USMT 4.0 supports capturing user state from all versions of Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP. If you are using older Windows operating systems (such as capturing user state from Microsoft Windows 2000), you can continue to use USMT version 3.0 for that purpose.

Prerequisites

For Lite Touch Installation (LTI) deployments, MDT 2010 requires the following components, regardless of the operating system being deployed. Install these components only on the computer on which you install MDT 2010:
• Microsoft Management Console (MMC) version 3.0
• Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 or later
• Windows PowerShell™ command-line interface (CLI), version 1.0 or 2.0 Community Technology Preview 3 (CTP3) or later
• Windows Automated Installation Kit (Windows AIK) for Windows 7
For Zero Touch Installation (ZTI) deployments, MDT 2010 requires the following components:
• If deploying Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 with Service Pack 2 (SP2) is required. The installation of System Center Configuration Manager also upgrades the Windows AIK to the version compatible with Windows 7.
• If deploying pre–Windows 7 versions of the Windows operating system (such as Windows Vista or Windows XP), you can continue to use Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 with SP1. MDT 2010 fully supports System Center Configuration Manager 2007 with SP1, although you cannot use the Deployment Workbench in this configuration to maintain an MDT database (MDT DB), as the Deployment Workbench requires the Windows AIK for Windows 7. If you are using an MDT DB with System Center Configuration Manager, use System Center Configuration Manager 2007 with SP2.

The Hyper-V role in Windows Server 2008 R2 provides you with the tools and services you can use to create a virtualized server computing environment. This virtualized environment can be used to address a variety of business goals aimed at improving efficiency and reducing costs. This type of environment is useful because you can create and manage virtual machines, which allows you to run multiple operating systems on one physical computer and isolate the operating systems from each other.

According the the release notes of Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2, the Hyper-V role now fully supports Live Migration of Virtual Machines using the failover clustering role, added and configured on the servers running Hyper-V.

Live migration

Live migration allows you to transparently move running virtual machines from one node of the failover cluster to another node in the same cluster without a dropped network connection or perceived downtime. Live migration requires the failover clustering role to be added and configured on the servers running Hyper-V. In addition, failover clustering requires shared storage for the cluster nodes. This can include an iSCSI or Fiber-Channel Storage Area Network (SAN). All virtual machines are stored in the shared storage area, and the running virtual machine state is managed by one of the nodes.

On a given server running Hyper-V, only one live migration (to or from the server) can be in progress at a given time. This means that you cannot use live migration to move multiple virtual machines simultaneously.

We recommend using the new Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV) feature of Failover Clustering in Windows Server 2008 R2 with live migration. CSV provides increased reliability when used with live migration and virtual machines, and also provides a single, consistent file namespace so that all servers running Windows Server 2008 R2 see the same storage.

Why is this change important?

Live migration does the following to facilitate greater flexibility and value:

Provides better agility. Datacenters with multiple servers running Hyper-V can move running virtual machines to the best physical computer for performance, scaling, or optimal consolidation without affecting users.

Reduces costs. Datacenters with multiple servers running Hyper-V can service their servers without causing virtual machine downtime or the need to schedule a maintenance window. Datacenters will also be able to reduce power consumption by dynamically increasing consolidation ratios and turning off unused servers during times of lower demand.

Increases productivity. It is possible to keep virtual machines online, even during maintenance, which increases productivity for both users and server administrators.
